Living in Arlington, VA: A Local's Honest Guide - Part 1
Last Updated: June 2, 2026
People ask me all the time what life is actually like in Arlington. Not the version on a real estate flyer. The real version. What do you do on a Tuesday night? Where do families end up on Saturday mornings? Is it as fitness-obsessed as everyone says? Can you really get by without a car?
I work here. I raise my family here. I walk these neighborhoods every day. This page is my honest answer to the questions I get before someone decides whether Arlington is right for them.
If you want the more specific stuff, schools, sellers, the move from DC, those each have their own page on this site. This one is the broad strokes. The rhythm of life here.

What is it actually like to live in Arlington, VA?
Arlington feels like a city and a neighborhood at the same time. Walkable on a weekday, slow on a Saturday morning. You can be in downtown DC in 20 minutes or on a hiking trail in 15. You'll see the same people at the same coffee shop and you'll start to know your barista's name. It is a place where 240,000+ people live but it doesn't feel anonymous. That balance is the thing most people don't believe until they spend a weekend here.

How fitness-focused is Arlington really?
It's a thing. Arlington has been named "America's Fittest City" for eight years running by the American Fitness Index, and you feel it. There's a running club out at 6 a.m. and a CorePower or Studio B class at 7. SoulCycle and Barry's are both in Clarendon. Solidcore, Orangetheory, and MADabolic are all in Ballston. Mind the Mat Pilates & Yoga in Clarendon is a North Arlington staple. Long Bridge Aquatics is one of the nicest public pool and fitness centers in the region. If you're a person who likes to work out, you'll fit in. If you're not, you'll get pulled in eventually.
