Arlington vs. Falls Church: Which One Fits Your Family?

Falls Church is about ten minutes west of a lot of Arlington. Ten minutes. And yet families who move between the two describe it like they changed countries. That gap always makes me smile, because it tells you the real difference here has nothing to do with distance.

 

I get this question constantly from families trying to figure out where they belong. So let me tell you how I actually think about it, the way I would if we were walking a neighborhood together.

Arlington is for the family that likes momentum. Fast-paced, urban, full of amenities. You can walk to dinner, walk to the train, walk to a farmers market, and never touch your keys.

 

I love how much variety fits inside one county. Clarendon and Courthouse buzz in a way that feels almost like a small city. Ballston and Virginia Square give you that same energy with a slightly different personality. Then you drive four minutes and land somewhere leafy and quiet like Westover or Donaldson Run, and it feels like a different world.

Getting around is car-oriented, and that is a feature, not a flaw. Quick access to I-66 and Route 50 means if your week already runs on four wheels, you are set up well.

 

What you notice most is the space. More yard, more distance between houses, more of that suburban exhale. For families with a dog, a couple of kids, and a growing pile of sports equipment, that adds up fast.

So Which One Is You?

Picture next Saturday morning. If it starts with walking somewhere for coffee, running into three people you know on the sidewalk, and hopping the Metro into the city with no parking anxiety, you are an Arlington family.

 

If it starts with the back door open, kids in the yard, and a drive to a morning game without thinking twice about it, you are a Falls Church family.
