McLean vs. North Arlington: Two Great Neighborhoods, Two Very Different Lives

McLean vs. North Arlington: Two Great Neighborhoods, Two Very Different Lives
Last Updated: April 22, 2026
I get this question more than almost any other. McLean or North Arlington?
And the honest answer I give every time is this: both are genuinely great places to raise a family. The schools are strong in both. You're close to DC in both. But the way life actually feels day to day is different — and that difference matters more than most people realize before they move.
I've been in Arlington for over 10 years and have helped a lot of families work through this exact decision. Here's how I actually think about it.
TL;DR / Quick Summary
- North Arlington has walkability, restaurants, and city energy that McLean doesn't offer
- McLean has bigger lots, bigger homes, and significantly more new construction activity
- Both markets have top-rated schools, rated 7–9 on GreatSchools.org
- McLean is further from DC — if you commute daily, you will feel the difference
- Around Langley, McLean reaches a completely different level of prestige and price
- The right choice comes down to how your family actually lives, not just what looks good on paper
Day to Day in North Arlington
North Arlington has an energy that's hard to describe on paper but easy to feel once you're here. Clarendon on a Friday night. The Saturday farmers market. Walking the dog to coffee. There's a reason people who move to Westover Village, Cherrydale, or Ballston tend to stay. The lifestyle has a pull to it.
If being close to the city is part of why you're making this move — if you want to stay connected to DC without actually living in DC — North Arlington delivers that better than anywhere else in Northern Virginia. You're 15 minutes from the Capitol without giving up the yard, the schools, or the sense of community.
Day to Day in McLean
McLean is quieter. More residential. The lots are bigger, the houses are bigger, and the pace feels more suburban in a way that a lot of families genuinely want after years in the city.
If space is the priority — a yard the kids and the dog can actually use, a dedicated home office, a guest suite your parents want to stay in for a week — McLean gives you more of all of that. There's also a significant amount of new construction here. Bigger lots attract builders, and that activity has created a lot of options for families looking for a newer home without going further out.
And then there's the Langley pocket. Around Langley, homes can easily be over $5 million. That's some of the most prestigious real estate in all of Northern Virginia. Even if that's not your price point, living in a market adjacent to it carries a certain weight for some buyers.
The Commute Question
McLean is further from DC. I think it's worth being straightforward about that. If you're commuting into the city most days, you will feel those extra miles. That said, most of the families I've seen choose McLean either work from home a few days a week or have decided the space is worth the drive. It's a personal calculation, and there's no wrong answer — just an honest one.
Schools
Both markets check the box here. Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Donaldson Run in North Arlington run 7 to 9 on GreatSchools.org. McLean runs 7 to 9 as well. For most families I work with, schools are not what tips the decision between these two. The lifestyle question almost always does.
My Honest Take
If walkability is part of your identity — if you like being able to walk somewhere on a weeknight, if you want to feel the energy of the area you live in — stay in North Arlington. Neighborhoods like Lyon Village and Ashton Heights give you character, community, and convenience that's genuinely hard to replicate.
If space is the priority and you're ready for a more suburban pace, McLean is worth a serious look. Both are great. The right one is the one that fits how you actually live.
